The Art of Thoughtful Leadership

What does it mean to be a great leader? We’ve seen this crucial skill everywhere, from development workshops to job postings and even in the Kendra Scott Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute’s name. We admire inspirational leaders in our daily lives and perhaps have even used the term when describing our skill set. Yet, the pressure to become one, or to continue to grow as a leader, can be overwhelming.

The reality is, however, that “leaders aren't born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work.” I hope this quote by Vince Lombardi, an influential American football coach in the NFL, reminds you that anyone can become a strong leader. Yes, anyone. Although our journeys to becoming one might look a bit different, we will all experience moments where someone else will depend on our courage to lead. Therefore, I have gathered a few tips and tricks that will hopefully complement your journey to becoming a confident and great leader. By embarking on this journey, we can encourage others to do so too and, as a result, build an uplifting community full of success stories.

1. Listen.

Though simple, the ability to listen is one of the most important traits a leader can have. Through listening, we give and earn respect, understand the needs of others, use feedback effectively, build trust, form connections, and show empathy. This helps to create a happier and more productive environment.

2. Lead by example.

Embody the qualities that you expect from the people around you. Just think about it, how many times have you talked to someone you admire and left the room wanting to act as they do?

3. Be supportive and inclusive.

By showing others you care about their success, you can raise morale in your team and create a more positive environment. Moreover, if everyone feels included, they will be more likely to share their ideas and contribute to the team’s efforts. I believe Jack Welsh described these important traits accurately when he stated, "before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.”

4. Get ready to make decisions.

Being a leader can be challenging, especially when you have to make tough decisions for your team under time constraints. Try to analyze situations as best as possible and stay true to yourself and your choices.

5. Find your leadership style.

Nowadays, there are tons of quizzes to find the leadership style best suits your personality. Determining your leadership style, or how you delegate tasks and communicate with others, can help you learn about your strengths and areas for improvement and how to interact with others who might have a different style.

Now it’s up to you… are you ready to lead and encourage the world to follow?
