Ten Things to Do in Austin Over the Summer

With summer coming around, keeping occupied can be difficult, especially without classes to occupy your time. Even if working a new job or internship, it is important to carve out some time for fun over the break. Here is a list of ten affordable things you can do here in Austin while school is out of session:

  1. A trip to Barton Springs: Barton Springs provides a great way to cool off from the Texas heat, with beautiful views and a spring-fed pool. Only 20 minutes from campus, a trip here is the perfect getaway for the day.

  1. Visit the State Capitol: Being so occupied during the semester, I often forget how close the campus is to the Capitol Building. A tour of the Capitol is a great way to learn about the state and is available Monday through Friday.

  1. Visit the Austin Bat Refugee: The Congress Avenue Bridge is home to the world's largest urban bat colony. Visiting the bridge at night makes for an unforgettable experience when the bats all fly out to search for food. Bat Fest also celebrates the bats with an annual summer event hosting vendors and attractions.

  1. A picnic in the park: Whether at one of the many parks in Austin or on campus at the main mall, packing a basket with food and a blanket is always a fun way to spend the day in the sun. Picnics are an affordable way to have a relaxing lunch or snack with a view.

  1. Hike through Zilker Park: Zilker Park offers hiking trails and gardens, which are perfect for walking through and staying active during the summer with a perfect view of downtown.

  1. Kayak or Paddleboard on Lady Bird Lake: Lady Bird Lake offers a variety of rentals for canoes, paddleboards, and kayaks. Relieve your stress with a relaxing trip through the lake.

  1. Try some new food: Austin’s food is unlike any other, with a diverse, well-known selection. Try a new food truck or Texas barbecue and find a new favorite spot.

  1. Shop at the Texas Farmers Market: The Texas Farmers Market hosts a variety of vendors for food, drink, produce, and dessert. Not only is it fun to browse all of the different stands, but the market also hosts live music, making it an even greater experience.

  1. Listen to live music: Whether at a venue, restaurant, or festival, Austin is always hosting live music. You can experience a live performance and discover new artists any day of the week.

  1. Camp at a State Park: For those wanting to escape the city, camping is the perfect vacation on a budget. A night in the woods with friends will create a memorable way to clear your minds and have fun together.
