Reflections and Wisdom from a Graduate Student's Journey

By: Vasudha Singh

I am a graduate student in the final semester of my Master's program, attending this undergraduate class among individuals in their early twenties. Being perhaps the oldest in the class has occasionally made me uncomfortable, as I sometimes struggle to keep up with the boundless energy and confidence of this younger generation. However, I consider myself rebellious enough to have left a well-paid job and my loving partner in India to pursue my career here independently. I am going to share some insights that I wish I had known or considered when I was in my early 20s. While it might seem like I'm running a bit behind in life, I don't regret a single moment of my journey.

Let's get started.

  1. Trust the process: Understand that things may not always go as planned, but trust in the process and the energy of life. Sometimes, things happen for the better in ways you can't foresee.

  2. Hold onto the people who were there at your worst: Recall those moments when a friend, partner, or family member stood by you during your most challenging times. Don't let go of these valuable connections, and be there for them when they need you in return.

  3. Embrace failure and rejection: Don't shy away from failure, whether it's an exam, a situation, or a relationship. It's through facing failure that you can truly grow and become your best self.

  4. Learn to live alone: Take time to live independently and embrace the experience of solitude. It's an opportunity for self-discovery and personal growth.

  5. Be vocal: Don't hesitate to express yourself. Ask questions, especially "Why?" It's through inquiry that we gain knowledge and understanding.

  6. Take a solo trip: Traveling alone can be an enriching experience that allows you to explore the world and yourself in a unique way.

  7. Pursue your passion as a profession: Whenever possible, align your career with your passions. This can lead to greater fulfillment and success.

  8. Find joy in life's small moments: Happiness often lies in appreciating the little things. Learn to savor life's everyday pleasures.

  9. Celebrate small victories: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how minor they may seem. They are milestones on your journey.

  10. Take care of yourself: Prioritize your mental and physical well-being. Self-care is essential for a fulfilling life.

  11. Know when to exit a conversation or situation: Don't be afraid to step away from conversations or situations that are unproductive or unhealthy for you.

  12. Stand up for yourself: Advocate for your own interests and well-being. Remember that no one else will do it for you.

  13. Recognize red flags: Learn to identify warning signs in relationships and situations. Trust your instincts.

  14. Embrace personal growth: Understand that you can undergo significant personal transformations between your twenties' start and end.

  15. The best is yet to come: Your future holds limitless potential, and the best experiences are often still ahead of you.

  16. Your title or designation doesn't define you: Your worth is not solely determined by your job or status. You are much more than your professional identity.

  17. Know your strengths and weaknesses: Understand your strengths well, but also be aware of your weaknesses. Self-awareness is a powerful tool for growth.

  18. Keep evolving as a human: Continuously strive to learn, adapt, and become a better version of yourself.

  19. Cultivate resilience: Life is full of ups and downs. Develop the ability to bounce back from setbacks, adapt to change, and remain resilient in the face of adversity. Resilience will be your anchor in turbulent times.

  20. Practice gratitude: Take time to reflect on the things you're grateful for. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude can help you maintain a positive outlook on life and appreciate the beauty in both the big and small aspects of your journey.
