Overcoming the Springtime Slump: A Guide to Spring Cleaning

At this point in the semester, organization is a necessity. Managing your grades, social life, and clubs can feel overwhelming, but keeping an organized living space may make keeping an organized headspace easier. Here are a few tips to declutter just in time for spring cleaning!

  1. Keep a clean desk

One of the hardest challenges for me is keeping my desk decluttered. Because I use my desk every day, more and more items pile up, creating a mess. My advice for maintaining a clean desk is to put everything away after using it. Even if you are in a rush, whenever you use something at your desk, put it where it belongs when you are done. If there is anything that you do not need on your desk, put it somewhere else. This immediately elevates the cleanliness of your room.

2. Clear out your closet

While much easier said than done, keeping a compact closet is a huge convenience, especially when living in a small space like a dorm. Having too many clothes you don’t wear makes it harder to pick an outfit every day and clutters your closet, blocking out clothes you may want to wear but have forgotten about. To clean your closet, I’d recommend taking everything out of it and trying everything on to decide whether to keep it. I also recommend storing clothes out of season somewhere other than your closet; personally, I like using a suitcase.

3. Clear your laptop/drive

With most assignments being digital, my laptop gets cluttered with files and documents frequently. It can be hard to navigate through this mess on my desktop, so a satisfying and helpful task is deleting old files and organizing the rest into folders. It can be hard to identify different files, so I also like to rename files with a title showing what they are. Clearing this workspace will make organizing notes and studying for exams easier.

4. Clear your head

As cheesy as it may be, the most important part of spring cleaning is to clear your headspace. Go outside, take a walk, hang out with friends, do whatever you can to take a break from studying, and take care of your well-being. If you haven’t already used your TeXercise passes, I’d highly recommend attending a yoga or exercise class to help destress and relax. Checking out some of UT’s Health and Wellness events is another great way to clear your head. This time of year can be stressful, so it is important to remember not to neglect your health.
