If you can see HER, you can be HER - Q&A with the founder of Sophy Rosy Shop

How did you come up with the idea for your business?

As an artist practicing in many mediums, I was already creating works of art that others enjoyed. I created gifts for family members, and was occasionally commissioned to create watercolor paintings of people’s houses. The pandemic hit, and I figured that I would try to turn my creations into a source of income. I spent quite a bit of time thinking about and deciding what I wanted the overall feeling of my business to be - I didn’t just want to sell my art, I wanted to curate a specific vibe or theme for my business that I could build upon over time. Thus, Sophy Rosy Shop was born: a space for my more whimsical and fun creations to be shared.

What does the average day look like for you now as an entrepreneur (especially compared to past jobs/days)?

As a full-time student, my weekdays are pretty full with classes and extracurriculars. After I’m finished with those, however, I spend my weekdays creating art and designing new products, and my weekends at artist markets around Texas selling my wares!

What are some of the top things you have learned so far?

There will be fluctuations in your success - the pathway isn’t linear.

Who or what inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

My mother, also an artist, sold her etching and lithography prints at markets. I remember being able to go with her, and see how she was able to generate income through her artistic passion.

What have been 1-2 of your proudest moments in creating your business?

  1. When I sold a product to my first non-family member customer

  2. At a market I was vending at, another vendor approached me and said that she had been following me online and was inspired by my work. Other than being completely surreal (what do you mean my followers are actual people and not just numbers on a screen?), it was incredibly endearing, and reminded me of my core values that inspired me to start a business in the first place.

What’s the best advice you have received along your journey?

Don’t try to fit the mold of what other creators are doing: your uniqueness is your appeal.

What’s a fun fact about you?

Unlike Van Gogh, I have both of my ears.
