How did you come up with the idea for your business?
In the year 2020, my neighbor, a single woman who had been disabled for a few years and lived with her caretaker, was left all alone when the caretaker rushed back to her village due to the pandemic scare. I took up the task of assisting her with daily chores. Inquiring about her disability, I learned that she was bound to a wheelchair and thus incapable of dressing by herself. With this insight gleaned from one person, I wondered about the many others who perhaps faced similar difficulties. The realization struck that I needed to think of something innovative to help others in the community facing similar problems. That’s when I researched possible solutions and innovated Cur8ability.
What does the average day look like for you now as an entrepreneur (especially compared to past jobs/days)?
As an entrepreneur, my day revolves around ideation, coordination, and management. I spend at least ten minutes sometime in the day reading articles about the clothing industry in order to understand what’s happening, what I can bring new to the brand, whether there are any changes to make etc. I like to stay informed so that I can constantly update my practice if needed. Usually in the evening when I have free time, I design new clothing pieces by merely sketching and post updates pertaining to Cur8ability on social media. At night (due to the time difference), I speak to the tailors in India to receive updates on production and offer them information about upcoming tasks or changes.
What are some of the top things you have learned so far?
Through this ongoing journey, I have truly learnt that “Consistency is the key to success”. I used to see and hear this quote in several places but never deeply thought about it or considered it. However, over these past three years I have seen that the only thing that has contributed to Cur8ability’s growth, is consistency. By conducting hours of research, establishing a team, and continuing to develop ideas on a daily basis, I have maintained the same flow of work I started it with. Moreover, I have learned that the only way any business can continue is if the employees / people involved in the business are motivated. If there’s less or no motivation, the process of production is often delayed or the products created are not as expected. In order to ensure motivation of each and every team member, there must be collective support, nurturing, and consideration. It definitely takes a whole team to create one product.
Who or what inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
For as long as I can remember, I have been watching different movies, tv shows, and reading numerous books. There isn’t only one person or thing who inspired me to become an entrepreneur, instead several different female characters and leads who made me want to be just like them - successful and a woman of my own. Right from Mirana Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada to Elle Woods from Legally Blonde, the world of leading women motivated and influenced me to be an empowered and confident businesswoman or entrepreneur.
What have been 1-2 of your proudest moments in creating your business?
My proudest moment was seeing the first piece of adaptive clothing in front of my eyes; months of ideation, hard-work, and thorough dedication led to this outcome. It was the best moment for me because I had finally created something of my own, something I could call my very own business product. Since I was merely 14, I felt even more proud since I didn’t know that I was capable of managing a whole team of people and executing the production of clothing. The second proudest moment in creating my business was receiving my first order from a customer. Seeing that email just reassured me of the very fact that I had created something that stood out to someone. This motivated me to give my best in the creation of a product for that customer as well as other customers in the future. That feeling of satisfaction has remained with me till now because it was the first recognition from a client in my entrepreneurial journey.
What’s the best advice you have received along your journey?
The best advice (also the most suitable one for aspiring entrepreneurs) I have received along my journey is that “You must always be passionate about what you’re doing otherwise it won’t work the way you want it to”. Basically, if there’s no passion, there’s no motivation and hence less reasons to start and progress in the business. I was passionate about the cause when I started Cur8ability and am still as ardent as I was back then. This has led me to continue putting in efforts to help Cur8ability grow because it comes naturally through a will to do so. This is perhaps the best advice since it’s applicable to everyone in any stage or aspect of their life. I also strongly believe that passion shapes the business and I can see its impact on Cur8ability greatly.
What’s a fun fact about you?
A fun fact about me is that I read ‘The Da Vinci Code’ by Dan Brown twice when I was 12 years old! I began rereading the book immediately after finishing reading it for the first time!
