If you can see HER, you can be HER - Q&A with the founder of Collegiate

Updated: Mar 29

How did you come up with the idea for your business?

Having undergone the college admissions process, I can attest to its overwhelming nature. I also know that educational inequality affects a significant number of students across the country, making it all the more challenging for students in lower-income schools to navigate this process. I knew there had to be a better way to get into college, learn about yourself, and figure out what you’re interested in and apply for than what currently exists. That’s how Collegiate was born.

What does the average day look like for you now as an entrepreneur (especially compared to past jobs/days)?

I definitely spend more time brainstorming ideas, working on my pitch, “interviewing” high school students about their college application process, etc. than I did before.

What are some of the top things you have learned so far?

I have learned the value of talking to potential users and getting their feedback on the product. I have also learned a lot about creating a good pitch, modifying it depending on the audience, etc.

Who or what inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

It was definitely a combination of a lot of different things, but I was firstly inspired by my grandma who was such a strong leader and started her own boutique while also running my grandpa’s tire shop after he passed.  I also joined a youth entrepreneurship program in 6th grade and felt such a huge sense of fulfillment when coming up with a solution to a big problem. It was also such a thrill to be in charge of all decisions related to my company and know that the amount of work you put in only benefits you and your business.  Then I tried creating a slime business and it was so much fun and I learned a lot.  Finally, my parents quit their jobs and became franchisees and say that it was the best decision they have ever made, and I can see how much value it has added to their life.

What have been 1-2 of your proudest moments in creating your business?

It was amazing winning $250 from the ASU Innovation Fund because that told me that they believed in my idea and thought that it could succeed.  I also was super proud of making it to the final stage of Demo Day- ASU’s biggest pitch competition.  It was a great experience to pitch to many investors and get their feedback and know that my product idea was good enough to make it to the final round of this competition.

What’s the best advice you have received along your journey?

The best advice I have received is to just get started. As a perfectionist, it can be hard sometimes to jump into things knowing that they may not be perfect or knowing that circumstances aren’t ideal.  However, it is better to do something, even if it is not perfect, than do nothing at all.

What’s a fun fact about you?

I am a black belt in Taekwondo and I continue to train to advance in belts.
