This summer, I was a part of a program designed to increase female involvement within the asset management industry. From classes taught by renowned professors to company visits in New York and group capstone projects, it was truly an invaluable experience in terms of the learning opportunity.
However, what impacted me most of all, were the people that I met. Having
grown up in Texas almost my entire life, I met women from across the country and was able to greatly broaden my perspectives. I became friends with girls from schools across the coast and realized that I had so much more in common with strangers than I ever thought. I learned to cherish taking risks and diving into the unknown. I also realized how deep down, when it’s the start of something new, everyone is a little nervous and is in the same exact spot as you and wants to find people that they connect with. So, here’s to trying new things. As someone who has always been a little change-averse their entire life, I know it’s easier said than done. I remember as a child, I would be hit with dread every Sunday night because I didn’t want to go to school the next day, or even now, joining a new club in college still leaves a similar feeling. I think that nervousness will only ever subside at best, so the sooner you confront it head on and look forward to what comes after the nerves, the better.
This summer, I learned to be adaptable to situations and take joy in unknown
situations. But it took time and some stumbles to get to where I am now. For example, part of me is definitely still a little nervous about studying abroad next semester. So, to whoever reading this, you’re not alone! It might feel scary sometimes to try something new, but the new memories and friends are worth it in the end.
