FoundHER Update with Ariel Lee & D'azhane Cook

Progress Report: Remane Hair Care

Background: Ariel Lee and her partner, D’azhane Cook, started Remane Hair Care company in order to address a common problem that many people with textured hair face: finding hair care products that work well for their hair type. They noticed that many products on the market were not formulated specifically for textured hair, and that this often resulted in damage, breakage, and other issues. As a result, Lee and Cook set out to create a line of hair care products that would be specifically tailored to the needs of people with textured hair. Their goal was to provide high-quality, nourishing products that would help to promote healthy hair growth and prevent damage, while also being affordable and accessible to a wide range of customers. In addition to their focus on product quality and accessibility, Lee and Cook were also motivated by a desire to empower and uplift their community. They saw their hair care company as a way to help people feel confident and beautiful, no matter their hair type or texture.

Entrepreneurial Leadership

  1. Ikigai: “I problem solve and disrupt industries to create products that make people’s lives simple and beautiful.” -Ariel Lee

  2. Communication: Ariel Lee effectively communicates her vision for Remane Hair Care company to her team, customers, and stakeholders, building a strong brand and community.

  3. Ideation: Lee was able to think outside the box and come up with creative solutions to problems. She was not afraid to try new things and experiment with different approaches.

  4. Context: Ariel Lee is able to understand and navigate the cultural and social context of the hair care industry, ensuring that Remane Hair Care company's products meet the needs of their diverse customer base.

  5. Individualism: Ariel Lee values individualism and celebrates the unique qualities of each person's hair. She sees the unique strengths that each person presents, and sees open communications of different perspectives very valuable. She designs her products to cater to a variety of hair types and textures, promoting self-expression and confidence.

  6. Visionary Thinking: Ariel Lee is a strategic and analytical thinker, using data and market research to inform her decision-making and drive the growth of Remane Hair Care company.

  7. Partnerships: “If you want to go fast do it alone, but if you want to get results go together.” Ariel mentioned that there are more pros than cons when it comes to having a partner. Primarily, a co-founder acts as a filter to questions and provides diverse experiences, skill sets, and perspectives. A con would be that it’s harder to come to a positive outcome when others have afflicting opinions.

  8. Mentors: Ariel’s attitude for gratitude shone as she listed the people who have inspired and helped her along her journey. Ruben Cantu is her product prodigy institute teacher. Courtney from Share Share and Dr. Tai have introduced new networks as she validated new products and grew her business. Ariel stated that, “You need heroes, mentors, and sponsors.”

Next Steps: Ariel Lee and her business partner, D’azhane Cook, have decided to stop working on Remane for now; however, Lee is still deeply committed to her entrepreneurial journey and the products she creates. Lee has demonstrated adaptability and foresight in choosing to make changes to the original business model. She is not afraid to take calculated and thoughtful risks, which shows her entrepreneurialism. Although she is a full time employee at Amazon and UX mentor to design students, she plans to use her free time to redesign the brand and add more services to connect clients with knowledgeable professionals that can help them with their hair care.

Conclusion: Although starting a business can be challenging, Lee was able to persevere despite obstacles and setbacks. She is determined to see her vision through even when faced with difficulties and shows her wisdom by being so open to pivoting. She is taking her time to find the best ways to address her customers needs and is excited about redefining Remane.
