Howdy y’all! Let's dive into my college adventure at the University of Texas, where being a first-generation college student has been quite the ride. It's a story of self-discovery, resilience, and how leadership has become my secret sauce in navigating this crazy journey. In this blog, I will share my insights on leadership and how it has become a cornerstone of my identity, drawing strength from my unique qualities and experiences.
In one of my classes with Dr. Robinson, we got to talking about our personal strengths as well as others. Mine, as it turns out, are responsibility, includer, woo, consistency, and restorative. They've become the building blocks of my leadership style, shaping the way I deal with challenges and connect with others. Learning my strengths through this class was not something that I anticipated or really remembered because I remember thinking, it was just another silly little test. Until, through teamwork assignments, I quickly learned why it’s so important to know your strengths and know others as well. Some strengths could clash meanwhile some strengths could connect really well. I think that’s so important to know and remember as I go forward with other group projects and anything I do with another person.
Picture this: Responsibility, the powerhouse that keeps me on my toes. As a first-gen student, it's been a game-changer, pushing me to excel in my studies, dive into extracurriculars, and actively engage with my community. It's the fuel for my ambition. This is just the first example in how I use my responsibility strength in my everyday life.
Then there's the Includer in me. I love creating spaces where diversity isn't just a buzzword; it's the heart of the conversation. In leadership, it means actively seeking out different perspectives, making sure everyone feels heard, and championing inclusivity as a force for positive change.
Now, let's talk about 'Woo.' Winning Others Over is not just a talent; it's my leadership strategy. Whether I'm leading a group project or getting involved in campus activities, building relationships is key. It's about making connections and collaborating effectively. Pair me with someone analytical? We’re the perfect match! This is a strength I quickly learned I should be grateful for because not everyone has the strength in talking with others.
Consistency is my steady companion. In the rollercoaster of college life, being consistent has been my anchor. It's not just about celebrating the highs but navigating the lows with grace and determination. Leadership, I've learned, is about resilience and sticking to your goals.
And oh, Restorative! I love solving problems. In leadership, this means turning setbacks into opportunities. I know when I get stressed out about something, I tend to make a pros and cons list. It's about fostering a culture of continuous improvement and seeing challenges as stepping stones to success.
Now, about my Enneagram number, I'm a 7—the Enthusiast. Embracing the adventurous spirit and optimism that come with it is just an addition into finding out who I am. It fuels my drive to explore new things, face challenges head-on, and approach leadership with an open heart and mind. Learning about my enneagram number made me feel like I was being completely read and the guest lecture knew my whole life story. It’s so useful to know your number because it can provide self-awareness, understand your/others motivations, and insights into different communication styles, needs, and perspectives. This knowledge can improve your relationships by fostering empathy, compassion, and effective communication.
In a nutshell, being a first-gen college student, and a leader with these strengths has shaped my college experience into a journey of self-discovery. I can’t say it has been easy but it sure has been worth it. Leadership isn't just a role for me; it's a reflection of who I am. And through sharing my story, I hope to inspire others to embrace their strengths, lead authentically, and celebrate the diversity that makes each of us extraordinary. Cheers to the wild ride of life and leadership!
