3 Attainable Goals You Should Set in the New Semester

1. Find a mentor.

One of the best things you can do right now in your college career is to look for people who can help guide you to become your best self in and out of the workplace.

If you’re currently taking advantage of TA, research, or office hour opportunities in college, look to professors, graduate students, or university leaders you trust to help you in your future decision-making.

2. Say “yes” to opportunities that excite you!

As Rena Pacheco-Theard said in her Fall 2021 EmpowHER Hour session, “Your career (and life) don’t need to be a straight line from what you might have imagined growing up, or what others have expected of you. Following your arrow is about being true to yourself and realizing your potential, regardless of where you start.”

College is a time to experiment and say “yes” to opportunities you wouldn’t otherwise have at this time in your life. Are there potential ideas or projects that you’re passionate about or seem exciting to you that might not align with your current major or what you think is expected of you? Go for it!

Once you plan next semester’s schedule, figure out which hours you can use to dedicate towards getting experience in areas you’re interested in. Why not make the most out of your time?

3. Land an internship that aligns with your skills and interests.

Allie Danziger shared in her EmpowHER Hour that graduates with internship experience earn ~12% more than graduates without internship experience. If you’re hoping to get hired quickly right out of college, finding a suitable internship for your future job is a must! Learn more about how to find and kill it at your internship in her EmpoweHER Hour session.

Now is the time to start planning for next semester and the new year! For more inspiration and encouragement to reignite your passion and motivation, re-engage with a project, business, or idea, or re-build after a tough season, be sure to attend the 2022 KS WEL Institute Women’s Summit.
