10 things I Wish Someone Told Me in College

By Sara Rodríguez

1. Say yes, even when you want to say no.

Your 20s are the perfect time to explore and figure out what you want in life. Try new things, even those that scare you. If you never try, you will never know what you are capable of. Take risks, because this is the perfect time to do it.

2. Success looks different for everyone.

Stop comparing yourself to others. Everyone’s journey is different because every single person has different needs, goals, and aspirations. What works for someone else, might not work for you and that’s okay. Focus on your own journey and stop worrying about what other people are doing.

3. Asking for help is not a sign for weakness, it’s a sign of strength.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Other people might have the same questions you do, but might be too scared to ask. You will save yourself, and many others a lot of time and effort!

4. Make a budget.

Start saving early and most importantly, don’t spend more than you earn. Avoid debt as much as possible and make a plan for your financial future.

5. Your first job will not be your only job.

Don’t be afraid to change jobs or industries. Everyone’s career path is different. It’s never too late to start over and explore new opportunities.

6. Your relationships, both romantic and platonic, have a big impact in your life.

Choose your friends and partners wisely. Your 20s will help you figure out what you want and don’t want in a relationship.

7. Kill them with kindness.

Don’t waste your time fighting or arguing with people that don’t like you. If they don’t, it’s their loss. Do you! Don’t waste your energy on people who don’t appreciate you.

8. Time is precious.

Spend your time on the things that matter to you, and that bring you joy and fulfillment. You will never be as young as you are today. Cherish every moment as much as you can.

9. Book that flight!

Being exposed to new cultures and places will broaden your horizons, and will help you grow as an individual. Travel as much as you can, you won’t regret it.

10. Don’t take life too seriously.

Life is meant to be enjoyed. Every problem has a solution. Everything will work out!
